A refrigerator that stops holding temperature puts a few hundred dollars of food on the clock. Most no-cooling calls come down to one of four things: a failed defrost cycle that has iced over the evaporator, a dead evaporator or condenser fan motor, a compressor start component that has given up, or a sealed-system leak. The first three are same-visit repairs. The fourth needs recovery, leak repair, evacuation and a proper weighed charge — work that requires EPA Section 608 certification and equipment most handymen don't carry.
Refrigerator symptoms we repair
- Fresh food section warm, freezer cold — usually a blocked damper, failed evaporator fan or a frost-choked evaporator coil.
- Nothing is cold at all — compressor start relay, control board, or a sealed-system loss of charge.
- Running constantly and never cycling off — dirty condenser, failing condenser fan, bad thermistor, or door gaskets that no longer seal.
- Water pooling inside or on the floor — clogged defrost drain, cracked drain pan, split water line or a leaking inlet valve.
- Ice maker not producing, or dumping slush — inlet valve, ice maker module, fill tube heater or freezer compartment running too warm.
- Loud buzzing, clicking or rattling — condenser fan blade, compressor mounts, or a relay clicking on and off under overload.
- Frost building up on the back wall or around the door — defrost heater, bimetal, defrost thermostat, or a door that isn't closing square.
- Error codes or a blank control panel — user interface board, main control board, or a wiring harness rubbed through at a hinge.
Built-in and column refrigerators
Built-in units are a different job from freestanding ones. A Sub-Zero 600 series, a Viking column or a Thermador Freedom refrigerator is trimmed into cabinetry, is often 84 inches tall, and frequently needs to be pulled and re-set on rollers without damaging panels or flooring. Sealed-system work on these is done in place. We carry the gauges, recovery equipment and micron gauge to do it correctly rather than "topping off" a system that has a leak in it.
Before you call: pull the kick plate and look at the condenser coil. If it's packed with dust and pet hair, and the unit is running non-stop but still cooling, a cleaning may buy you time until we arrive. If the freezer is cold and the fridge is warm, don't keep opening the door — you're just pushing warm air in.

We start with the actual complaint and the machine's own diagnostics, not a parts-cannon guess. That means reading stored fault codes, checking temperatures at the evaporator and in each compartment, testing components under load, and confirming airflow before anything gets replaced. You get the diagnosis, the part cost and the labor cost before we start the repair — and if the honest answer is that the unit isn't worth fixing, we'll tell you that too.

Is it worth repairing a refrigerator, or should I replace it?
The usual rule of thumb is that a repair worth more than about half the replacement cost on a unit past 10 years old is a hard sell. Built-ins are the exception — a Sub-Zero or Viking column costs $8,000 to $18,000 to replace, so a $900 sealed-system repair on a 15-year-old unit is often the right call. We give you the numbers and let you decide.
Do you repair the sealed system, or only swap parts?
We do sealed-system work — recovery, leak repair, evacuation to a proper micron level and a weighed charge. That work requires EPA Section 608 certification and the right equipment, and it's the main reason built-in refrigerator owners call a specialist instead of a general handyman.
My ice maker stopped working but the fridge is cold. Is that a separate repair?
Usually yes. Ice maker failures are most often the water inlet valve, the ice maker module itself, a frozen fill tube, or a freezer that's running a few degrees too warm to cycle the mold. It's typically a straightforward same-visit repair.
